In these challenging times during the COVID-19 pandemic, the rates of loneliness and feelings of isolation are increased. Here are my 6 top tips to prevent loneliness from developing:

  • Stay connected with friends and family – Staying in contact with loved ones can prevent loneliness and isolation. Staying connected using technology platforms such Skype, Zoom or Facetime can be really beneficial. Consider reconnecting with family or friends that you have not had contact with for a while.

  • Get out and about – With State and Federal Governments easing some social restrictions, planning a regular outing for exercise, visiting friends, or engaging in a meaningful activity outside of your home offers some great opportunities.

  • Get involved in a new activity – Try something new or re-engage with an old activity. Good to consider some online learning or learn a new skill. Try looking online for something that might be of interest for you.

  • Volunteer – Helping others is a great way to help yourself feel more connected. Even though there are still social restrictions in place, there are many ways in which you can help out those in need such as a family member or a neighbour in need.

  • Routine – Keeping a routine is a very important part of maintaining mental health. Having a regular schedule of balanced activities throughout the day will help with stress management and provide a sense of achievement.

  • Get support – If loneliness and social isolation are causing you distress, you should discuss your concerns with a GP, counsellor or a trusted person.
